What is a Thermoplastic Adhesive Film?

Thermoplastic adhesive film, commonly known as hotmelt adhesive film, is typically presented in the form of a roll. This adhesive solution can be manufactured using different techniques, resulting in either monolayer or multi-layer structures. 

  • Monolayer Thermoplastic Adhesive Film: This film consists of a single layer of adhesive material. 
  • Multi-layer Thermoplastic Adhesive Film: This film combines up to 5 layers coextruded into a single film.  

Examples include: 

  • 3-layer ABA films (Adhesive+Barrier+Adhesive)  
  • 2-layer AB films (Adhesive+Barrier) or 2-layer AA films (Adhesive+Adhesive)  

Thermoplastic adhesive film production processes 

Those adhesive films are produced through extrusion, a process that extrudes materials by using a die. 

Two common methods for film extrusion are: 

  • Blown Film Extrusion: is the process of melting plastic granules, blending them, and stretching them into a sizable, continuous tube (bubble). Subsequently, this tube is flattened to produce the film.  
  • Cast film extrusion: In the cast film extrusion method, liquefied materials are forced through a slot die onto a chill roll that is internally cooled. Subsequently, the material passes through a sequence of rollers, crucial for defining the properties of the cast film, including its thickness. Following this stage, the cast film undergoes trimming and rolling processes.
